liberal is the new conservative

[EDIT on 4/10/09: I was kind of proved right on this]

I realized something a few days ago...

By 1980, liberals (especially those affiliated with the democratic party) were out of ideas. All we were doing was keeping the social programs of LBJ and FDR from being gutted. Meanwhile, The Ike Eisenhower republicans, those conservatives who didn't want to completely gut the New Deal or Great Society, were losing their power in the GOP to the Barry Goldwater "Libertarian/Small Government" faction of the party. They did have some valid points (Like on Welfare and Term Limits)

The republican/conservative agenda has basically won out in the last 30 years. Notice how much debate their was on banning handguns after dozens of people were capped by Napoleon Dynamite at Virginia Tech? Oh right, THERE WAS NONE!

The Democratic party and Liberals (who believe it or not are not the same thing as democrats) were on defense for all of the 1980's and 1990's. We were defending abortion rights, affirmative action, welfare, social security, medicare, unions and the EPA from being gutted by conservatives. We had no new ideas.

Things have changed.

Welfare and Unions are gone. Affirmative Action (I'm not against it but...) isn't as need now because of the progress that are country has made since 1964 (except for poor people of color. There are more blacks in the middle class now than in the 60's and 70's) Dubbya and most republicans are for keeping medicare and social security (although in a BS ed "privatized" function). And abortion rights and environmental laws have been pushed back as far as will be tolerated.

There is nothing more useful for conservatives to do for our country.

Whats that?...

Immigration?...

Please... We never should have annexed Texas to California in the first place in 1848. The Mexicans are just taking back what was theirs in the first place. Plus, the whole "they do the jobs we won't" thing.

Crime?...

We give 20 year sentences for pot dealers in this country. This might get me in trouble, but I think prison sentences are TOO LONG in this country. Except for Pedophiles. You'd think the government could just chemically block perverts testosterone, but whatever. Also, we have weakened so many basic rights (like property sovereignty when it comes to drug fore closers) that being a criminal isn't as lucrative as it used to be.

War on Terror?...

You really think that the war on terror is being fought correctly? To paraphrase Bill Maher, Terrorism is a law enforcement issue. You can't fight with an army if your enemy doesn't have an army.

Face it conservatives, the idea ball is in the liberals hands now. Health care, Global Warming, Evolution, abortion, death penalty (More people disapprove of the DP now than at any time since it was reinstated in the 70's. Plus the last 30 years have proved that it is not a deterrent.), education (after the failure of No Child Left Behind and Vouchers), and yes even the war on terror is now in our court.

If it makes you feel any better, the next president (who has a 70% chance of being a democrat) isn't going to do anything too drastic to our "Reagan Utopia" any time soon. But maybe in 2020 or 2024.
